Research & Development

The multidisciplinary scientific research activity of the Laboratory for Radioisotopes takes place continuously in the fields of chemical, medical, pharmaceutical and physical-chemical sciences through the projects in the fields of basic and applied research.

Multidisciplinarity, competence, innovation as well as good cooperation are the key features of the research and development sector of the Laboratory for Radioisotopes.

Over the past 60 years, more than 200 products from various categories have been developed and released on the market: radionuclides, sealed radioactive sources, radiopharmaceuticals, medical devices.

Development of new radiopharmaceuticals

The current activities of the research and development teams are focused on the development of new radionuclide generators, radiopharmaceutical kits and radiopharmaceutical medicinal products for various applications in diagnostics and therapy. Some of the activities are:

synthesis of various organic compounds, nanoparticles and microspheres
examination of their chemical and physical characteristics using different methods
labeling with γ-emitters: ¹²⁵I, ^99mTc, ¹¹¹In, ¹⁴⁹Gd
labeling with β-emitters: ⁹⁰Y, ¹³¹I, ¹⁵³Sm, ¹⁷⁷Lu
labeling with α-emitter: ¹⁴⁹Tb…
examination of the physico-chemical properties of labeled compounds using different techniques (HPLC, FPLC, ITLC, gel and ion exchange chromatography, extraction)
tests of biochemical and biological properties of labeled compounds (in vitro stability, binding to plasma proteins, in vitro tests in cell culture, physiological distribution in the organs of animals used (rats, mice), scintigraphy of animals with tumor xenografts).

International projects

The Laboratory for radioisotopes has long-standing cooperation with other scientific-research laboratories from Europe that deal with the development of new radiopharmaceuticals. Cooperation is realized through joint projects, exchange of experiences and staff education.
